01 What is GDPR and why does it affect AI tools?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is EU law that governs how personal data is collected, stored, and processed. It applies to any AI tool that processes data about EU residents — regardless of where the tool company is based. If you use an AI writing tool that stores your prompts, or a transcription tool that records meetings, GDPR applies.

02 The 5 questions to ask before using any AI tool

1. Where is my data stored?

EU-based servers or providers with EU data residency options are safest. US-based storage requires additional safeguards under GDPR.

2. Is my data used to train their models?

Many free AI tools train on your inputs by default. Check the privacy policy — GDPR-compliant tools offer opt-out or process data under a legitimate legal basis.

3. Do they have a Data Processing Agreement (DPA)?
