Is Atlassian (Jira, Confluence, Trello) GDPR Compliant?

Is Atlassian GDPR compliant for European development and project teams? Jira, Confluence, Trello, and Atlassian Intelligence — data hosting, DPA, and EU residency explained.

Is Atlassian GDPR Compliant?

Verdict: Yes — strong compliance with EU data residency available

Atlassian (Jira, Confluence, Trello, Bitbucket) is GDPR compliant with a comprehensive Data Processing Addendum and EU data residency available for Jira and Confluence on Enterprise plans. One of the better US cloud providers for European compliance.

Product-by-Product Breakdown

Jira and Confluence (Cloud): GDPR compliant. DPA available. EU data residency available on Premium and Enterprise plans — data stored in Frankfurt, Germany. Atlassian Intelligence (AI features) covered under the same DPA.

Trello: GDPR compliant. DPA available. No EU data residency option — data processed in the US under SCCs. For teams requiring EU hosting, use Jira instead of Trello.

Bitbucket: GDPR compliant. DPA available. EU data residency available.

Atlassian Intelligence: Atlassian's AI features (Jira AI, Confluence AI) are available on Premium and Enterprise plans. Processed within Atlassian's infrastructure under the existing DPA. Does not train on your data.

EU Data Residency — The Details

Atlassian's EU data residency means your primary data (issues, pages, attachments) is stored in the EU. However, some operational data — such as support tickets and certain log data — may still be processed outside the EU. This is common among US cloud providers and is covered under SCCs.

To enable EU data residency: Atlassian admin → Settings → Data residency → Select European Union.

Atlassian Access and Identity

If you use Atlassian Access for SSO and user provisioning, this adds an additional layer of data processing. Atlassian Access is covered under the same DPA.

The Trello Problem

Trello is the weak link in the Atlassian portfolio for European compliance. No EU data residency, less mature compliance infrastructure than Jira/Confluence. If your team uses Trello for any work involving personal data — employee information, customer project details — consider migrating to Jira or a EU-hosted alternative.

Practical Steps

  • Upgrade to Premium or Enterprise to access EU data residency
  • Enable EU data residency in admin settings
  • Sign the Data Processing Addendum
  • Review which Atlassian apps/integrations your team uses — each may be a separate processor
  • Migrate away from Trello if EU hosting is required
